i decided to download the trial version of the updated nikon nx. using it was fairly intuitive, the controls are nice and surely enough for most photo-editing but the speed of the applications leaves something to be desired. i did end up opening the saved jpeg in pscs2 where i converted it to black and white and did some final out-put sharpening.
